The former Brazilian president arrested after being deemed a flight risk

Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was convicted of orchestrating a military coup in last fall and handed more than 27 years in prison, but he remained under confinement pending appeals.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a preventative measure after fresh information were revealed.

This involved seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a invitation to a demonstration that could enable a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a document approving the detention, Justice Moraes said information from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the tracking monitor to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the protest called by his child.

His son, his son Flávio, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Will you battle for your country, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your settee? I urge you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the chance of his move to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a history of arranging to seek refuge through a consular facility", a declaration said.

The legal document underscores that the US embassy in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is situated around 8 miles from his dwelling.

Worldwide Consequences

The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist US President Donald Trump, causing him to impose a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.

He is being held in a national police facility in the capital and will have a custody hearing on the following day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with digital surveillance.

They also asked that he be allowed to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other health problems.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was found guilty of leading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plan which encompassed plans to murder his opponent and his running partner, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was prevented because it couldn't obtain the backing of the armed forces officials. The current president was sworn in without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, many Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged government buildings in the capital, the capital city.

The law enforcement intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The justices found that the rioters had been encouraged by him whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the period, the legal team called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The former president called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
